This resource was developed from the data collected and established by Ralph and Amy Reid, and which served as the basis for the six cumulative editions of "Australian family histories : a bibliography and index" published between 2004 and 2015.
Although every reasonable measure has been taken to ensure the accuracy of the included information no responsibility, either direct or implied, is assumed by the compiler and publisher of this guide for any consequence of the use of information contained within it.
Purpose and Scope
This bibliography provides details of works published in Australia relating to family histories and genealogies of Australian families. In some instances biographies of individual persons have been included, where such works additionally provide genealogical information relating to two or more generations of a family or families.
In this context ‘published’ means that the work is available to the general public, through either the National Library of Australia, or any of the various State or Territory libraries, or generally through local public libraries and/or the major family history societies. It does not include archival items such as manuscripts.
Description Letter Codes
The description of titles uses, for sake of convenience, the following letter codes to indicate the type and scope of the content:- B = bibliography;
- F = facsimile/s;
- G = genealogical table/s or chart/s;
- I = illustration/s;
- M = map/s;
- P = portrait/s;
- X = index/es.
Limitations
ALL PERSONS USING THIS BIBLIOGRAPHY AND INDEX MUST BE FULLY AWARE OF ITS LIMITATIONS
The main limitation is that NOT ALL OF THE LISTED WORKS HAVE BEEN FULLY INDEXED:
- SOME percentage of the works have had listed ALL the family names (of both male and female family members) that appear in the family tree/s detailed in those works.
- For SOME works, usually only SMALL lists of included family names have become available; these are generally the male line family names occurring in the family tree/s detailed in those works.
- For the MAJORITY of works, only the family name of the MAIN family that the works describe has been included.
